Course Description

Humber’s Bachelor of Behavioural Science degree program provides you with the knowledge, skills and abilities required for in-depth work in the behavioural science field with individuals throughout the lifespan. The program is firmly grounded in the theory, principles and practices of behavioural science (applied behaviour analysis and cognitive behavioural approaches) and psychology. Applied behavioural analysis uses behavioural rules in everyday situations to help people change their behaviour to improve quality of life. The program focuses on data obtained through observation as it investigates behaviour, cognitive events and the influence of envronmental factors on behaviour. Courses in the first two years of the program provide a strong foundation in behaviour analytic approaches, psychology, research and ethics, while highlighting specific special populations. This is followed in the final two years with further in-depth study of ethics and professionalism, individual and group counselling, issues in behavioural psychology, further special populations, and two courses of senior thesis work. Overall, the program emphasizes critical thinking, analytical skills, interprofessional practice and leadership. The Behavior Analyst Certification Board, Inc.® has approved the Humber BBS course sequence as meeting the coursework requirements for eligibility to take the Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst Examination®. Applicants will have to meet additional requirements to qualify. Students will have the opportunity to engage in work placements (which are typically unpaid). They will complete 490 hours of fieldwork across two semesters (210 hours in each 14 week semester) with one of Humber’s community partners. Students will be supported by a field placement co-ordinator. Graduates of this program will have the knowledge and skills to pursue further graduate study in behavioural science or related fields. There are also good employment opportunities routinely found in health organizations, non-profits, government, charities and education sectors. Graduates may find employment as behaviour assistants, behaviour associates, educational assistants, autism instructor therapists and/or use their skills to enhance their employment as workers in a variety of social service settings with vulnerable populations such as mental health, developmental disabilities, autism, addictions, seniors and youth. With additional education and experience, graduates may be considered for roles as counsellors and therapists, behaviour analysts, gerontologists or co-ordinators of programs in the social service sector. Note: If a student applies for conditional acceptance but later decides to take their IELTS/TOEFL, they will need to reapply and submit a new application.
